Helping the hospitalero carry mattresses
Camino story: pilgrim helps hospitalero with chores, gratitude, and community labor in an albergue.

Muscle gratitude
Key moment: I arrived annoyed by a squeaky bunk; the hospitalero looked more tired than the hinge. Without planning, I asked if he needed hands. He did—mattresses, like stubborn animals, resisted the storage room.

Sweat returned quickly; so did perspective. My blisters seemed smaller compared to his month-long shift of midnight arrivals and clogged drains.
Other pilgrims joined; work became rhythm. Someone played music from a phone; we pretended it was a training montage.
Afterward, he poured water like blessing. I slept deeply—exhaustion earned through giving hits different than exhaustion earned through sulking.
Next morning, squeak still existed; patience did too. Small service tunes ears.
If you can help, offer before you judge. Hospitaleros remember pilgrims who see them as humans, not vending machines.
