Many fountains are marked potable; when in doubt, ask a local or fill at a bar. “No potable” means respect it—giardia is a memorable souvenir nobody wants.

Carry at least one litre in hot weather; two is wiser on exposed Meseta stages.
A soft bottle or collapsible flask packs smaller when empty—useful for airports and light shopping days.
